Riding the Elephant by Craig Ferguson
When I was in the throws of pregnancy and both very anxious and very sick, I used to watch Celebrity Name Game. The witty banter and calming voice of Craig Ferguson got me through some pretty rough times with some mindless fun. I truly missed the show when it was taken off the air, so when I saw he had book coming out I just had to check it out. I opted for the audiobook so that I could hear his voice again. His even tone and insightful observations proved to be a good diversion to an otherwise stressful week. His thoughts meandered and his stories were both humorous and heartbreaking. The thing that struck me the most was his insight on love, specifically true love. Even more to the point, love at first sight. He talked about how he didn’t really experience love in its purest form until he met his son. I could fully relate. I really appreciated his quote about love being most true when you care more about the other person’s well being over your own interests. I wouldn’t say it was the best memoir I read that year, and this one is more of antecdotes from throughout his life, but I will say it was a welcome stress reliever, when I really needed it the most.
