Rating: 5/5

Praise: It gives such a hilarious and honest look at mothers and creative geniuses and what becomes of them when their world’s collide.

Critique: The line between genius and insanity is a very tight one to walk, Maria Semple does an amazing job, though she may waiver a bit. I also did not care for the PA storyline.

Where I read: I read this book more than 5 years ago, LOVED IT. Literally laughed out loud. I recently saw the movie when it came to DVD, and couldn’t love it more, so I listened to the audiobook again. Just as hysterical the second time around.

Where you should read: A place you can curl up, and laugh out loud without feeling self-conscious.

Book or audio book: Both! I loved the format when reading it. It is assembled as a series of notes, and emails. After watching the movie, I re-read it, or rather, listened to the audiobook. It was equally smashing.

Reader critique: The audiobook is narrated by Kathleen Wilhoite (whom you may remember as either Pepper Ann, or Jess’s mom Liz in Gilmore Girls, depending on your generation), you will love her interpretation.

Why you should read it:
It will both make you laugh and renew your spirit.

Why is it special: There are few books that you think yes, that is exactly right! This is one of them!

What do you need to know if you didn’t read it: You are missing out on what will become an instant favorite of your own!
